Brooklyn Language Arts

I (Michele Somerville) am a writer and author with a background in teaching students ages 5 through 84.

I teach creative and scholarly writing to children and adults, coach writers working on manuscripts, edit and proofread creative manuscripts and run small writing workshops for writers of all ages.

I tutor college, middle and secondary school students in English and Language Arts. . As well I have long experience working with elementary school students in all subject areas and in the area of homework help. Often with university students and sophisticated secondary school writers, I work more as a coach or editor than a tutor. 

Whatever the ages of my students or clients, we work together to identify obstacles, and together we design flexible, practical plans of action for surmounting those impediments.  Children and adolescents, in particular, are imaginative creatures. Even in scholarly writing imagination is a powerful learning tool. I use this as I aim to coach young students to take pride in and custody of their learning, and I exhort adult writers to be aware of the imagination that dwells within, waiting to be summoned and put to good use.
